This semester working at Chester Education Foundation has been an enjoyable experience. My primary and straightforward goal was to build relationships with students and get along with them. In my head, it seemed as fast as possible. However, it has proven to be quite a curve since the students all possess different personalities that I had to adapt to best help them. As I get there, I appreciate those I have been able to connect with immediately. I also look forward to staying consistent and persistent with others since, as a student myself, I know it can take time.
Through these weeks, I have appreciated Miss Scalpa’s communication skills and advice on how to interact with the students, giving me space to interact with them and helping interpret some of the lessons to how I see fit for the students, which has helped me build rapport with them and gain much feedback from them. I hope that after spring break, I can make better relationships and introduce them to new things and more career choices they can go through, which is necessary as most of them are finishing high school and determining where to go from here.
One beautiful thing to see is how the community center combines all the necessary technology and setups for comfort and learning. In all honesty, lives will be changed here, and I am honored that this will happen and I will have been part of it.
