I also really enjoyed Dr. Baker-Bell's reading as she puts her ideology into practice by writing her book in AAVE. Her writing style made me question my preconception of what academic writing should look like. As college students, we often believe that academic papers should be written as formally and as complicatedly as possible because those are the types of papers that we read and we want to emulate these academics. However, I often find that I have a harder time reading and deciphering these papers. I think that this is a problem we have in academia. Although writing in that way may make us seem more intellectual and professional, it often defeats the purpose of the paper which is to spread knowledge. I personally prefer these types of readings as it is often more understandable and engaging.
