Hi Hannah :)

I really appreciate how you pulled out the quote, “many of the disabling effects people associate with an inability to hear are not about hearing at all but rather emerge from the limitations placed on the deaf by the language ideologies and social expectations of the hearing” (174). This part of the chapter really stood out to me as well, and it reminded me of something we talked about in my Special Education class: people are disabled by their environments. This reframing of disability has really helped me think about the connection between the systems of power and ableism that you highlight in your response. The section of this chapter on Martha's Vineyard really drove home this point to me. d/Deafness was something that was not seen as "abnormal" or "bad" in this environment, partially because of the way signed languages were valued and used in the society.
