Irene, I really appreciate your insights on the Barret chapter. I agree that understanding notions of standard English are so important. As I have grown up, I have begun to realize the power structures that created and keep in place the idea of standard English, and in relation, the negative connotations related to “non-standard English”. Especially when thinking about multilingual students and emergent bilinguals it is even more crucial to ensure that classrooms can be a welcoming space, regardless of the “appropriateness” of someone’s language. Standard English has been used as a tool of oppression for so long, and one of the goals of educators today, is hopefully to shift the rhetoric to become more inclusive.
