What does it mean to be German in the twenty-first century? Looking at modern Germany as a multicultural society shaped by mass migrations, this course examines interpolations of Turkish German, German Jewish, and Black German narratives in a variety of genres ranging from literature, film, and music to podcasts and vlogs. The intersections of migration, gender, and memory will loosely guide class discussions as we interrogate how minoritized communities in Germany challenge and reimagine contemporary definitions of Germanness.
