Dear Folks:
Problem 2 (B&B Problem 3.7) mentions the Poisson distribution. Here are some helpful things:
i) The Poisson distribution is the subject of Problem 6 (B&B 3.3). If you want to do Problem 6 before Problem 2 ... you will meet this distribution.
ii)The Poisson distribution is explained in G&T 3.8. Suggested reading stops at G&T 3.7 but in 3.8 they solve part Problem 2 part (a) for us in a few lines. Feel free to use this?!
iii) B&B is *not* asking you to show that a binomial distribution approaches a Gaussian, just to assume it. While G&T shows it in a section titled "the binomial distribution for large n", you are only asked to assume the result. Namely, assume that p(k) dk is Gaussian with the mean and sigma that B&B give you - and carry on ...
