This course explores the radical and revolutionary movements that remade European society from the late eighteenth century through the early twentieth century. Beginning with the French Revolution, we will examine how new social classes and political ideologies evolved alongside industrial capitalism, state formation, and imperialism. It was a century of many "isms," ranging from conservatism, liberalism, and nationalism to socialism, feminism, and anarchism. As we attend to each, we will analyze how new social relations, cultural norms, and technologies abetted repeated attempts to dismantle existing political orders and social hierarchies and bring new ones to life.
