The cornerstone of the field of Ethnomusicology is ethnographic method, the systematic study and analysis of cultural lifeways of a group of people. In this upper-level course, we will travel the African continent bearing witness to a variety of African musical traditions through some of the most exciting ethnographies written in the last 50 years. We will explore questions of sound, style, ethics, and the ethnographic process as we journey around the continent and sample its musical diversity. Our primary concern will be how African musics are represented in our texts. No previous experience with African musics is necessary for the course but MUSI 005A or the approval of Dr. Klingenberg is required to enroll.
