A course combining readings in and discussions of the genres of fantasy, science fiction, and supernatural (horror) fiction with assignments both to write in the genres and, ulitmately, to workshop and critique one another’s works. The readings in the course represent a diversity of genres under the umbrella of the fantastic—including what are sometimes referred to as “extra-genre” or slipstream fictions, a term we’ll explore further. As no brief collective of novels can hope to represent this breadth, we’ll work with a few novels, and flesh out the span around them by supplementing the novels with a great deal of short fiction.
