Welcome to Media Industries and the Future of the Internet! This course is an introduction to media industries, broadly:
● How media industries are studied
● What media practitioners do
● The role media industries play in our lives
● The way media industries continue to transform and “converge” in the “internet age.”
Throughout the semester, we will focus on understanding the nature of "media convergence." It is a theory, a practice, and a strategy that experts, practitioners, scholars, and consumers engage with everyday to make sense of the impulses and forces that guide our social media use, what we buy, what we eat, what we listen to, what we watch, and how we think about the internet. To do this, we will combine critical and theoretical perspectives on media industries with primary source material produced by and about media industry experts.
Each week, we will discuss trends and issues in a wide variety of media industries such as news, advertising, music, audio, movies, television, gaming, and the "internet industry" at large and where they all converge. The goal is to explore the complex ways in which multiple industries are always involved in any particular project. The course is ideal for those who want to be more critical media consumers and/or producers by providing tools to better understand how media industries work in the United States and around the world.
