This course will introduce the foundational elements of drawing through the practice of
working from direct observation. Subjects will include still life, the figure, interiors, landscape,
and constructed objects. The development of perceptual skills and the capability to see and
translate visual relationships onto a two dimensional surface is central to this course. The class
will cover a range of drawing media and techniques. No prior drawing experience is
necessary. Throughout the semester we will engage in discussions addressing historical and
contemporary drawing issues. The purpose of these discussions is to provide art historical
context and concrete examples of things we are learning in class.
