This course examines music and dance cultures from around the world in their social, political, and historical context. Taking an ethnomusicological approach, we will consider music and dance both in and as culture and develop critical listening and analytical skills to discuss sound, movement, and culture. Topics will include identity, race, ethnicity, gender, class, religion, memory, migration, globalization, tourism, and social and political movements. Additionally, by completing this course students will enhance skills in critical thinking, writing, and communication. As a designated writing course, we will focus on the process of writing including multi-staged writing (including revisions), peer review, writing conferences, writing workshops, and dedicated attention to building an argument.
